Gardening Tips and Information
After Care- What to do after your landscape is installed:
- Water daily for the first two weeks
- Water 2-3 times per week for the next 2-3 months
- Watering 1-2 times a week for the next few years until it is fully established
- Be observant in summer months when trees and shrubs will endure most of its stress.
- Watering too often or standing water can be just as harmful as not enough water.
Pruning/Deadheading Perennials and Shrubs:
Perennials- Deadheading most perennials should be done after flowers are spent and unattractive, usually summer/fall. Some perennials, like Purple Cone Echinacea is a great food source for gold finches in the winter. Others like Hydrangeas and Russian sage look very attractive in the winter.
Shrubs- Some shrubs bloom on old wood or very early, if flowers set and pruning is done too late in the season this will stop blooms from appearing next season. Prune these early bloomers right after flowering!
- Common with Viburnums, Hydrangea macrophyllas, Rhododendrons, Dogwood spp., Lilacs and Forsythia.
- Always remove, dead, diseased, and damaged branches.
Watering New Sod:
Watering the first few weeks, twice a day, morning and afternoon. Watch for any puddling, yellowing or squishy feeling, then reduce water. Do not walk or move the sod pieces. It should fully root in about 3 weeks and you may continue mowing regularly.
How to stop deer from eating plants:
Deer are a very common issue in an urban area, they feed on almost every planting. If scented deterrents are not working, barriers like fences are also not the resolutions try finding plants that are resistant. Right plant right place.
- Young deer will try everything once unless the texture desists them, like devils walking stick for example.
- Others include: Ornamental grasses, False Indigo, Ferns (great sub. for Hosta), Iris, Lamb’s Ear, Oregon Grape-Holly, Helleborus, Allium, Peony, and many more!
